Which file converstion gives the most songs on your MP3?

My MP3 player says it holds 500 songs, but when I downloaded my songs it was only able to hold 112 songs. Is this due to the size of the songs or the file conversion. I used WMA. (Windows Media Player) ? Which file conversions or compression would allow for you to put more songs on the MP3? Thank you!!!!!
